The Evergreen Cemetery was founded in 1921 and named the Colored Cemetery of Mart. The cemetery was established as the African American cemetery for Mart residents and family members. It is divided by the first purchased land tract (old) and the second parcel of land purchase in 1975 (new). The donors established the Evergreen Cemetery Association, elected trustees and delegated forthcoming trustees to continue managing the cemetery affairs via succession.
This is an African American Cemetery located near Mart, TX.
The original ??? square ft of land was purchased in 1921 by the Douglas family.
In 19?? it was split and divided into two separate parts in which ???sqft was sold for the development of the cemetery. The 2nd property was purchased in Nov. 1975.
In 2022 the middle section was divided by a line of trees. The community held 6 tree
trimming events to clear the middle section. Each section had a gate opening onto the
road. Plans are underway to install a new fence to enclose the cemetery from illegal
activity. There is no sign at the Cemetery yet but, plans are underway to add the cemetery
name, however, one is located on Douglas and West Burleson Street pointing to the
direction of the cemetery. The graves are scattered though out the property. The part on
the far right holds older headstones than the part on the left. Both sections are maintained
by a mow contractor. Since we are not exactly sure how many available spaces are in the
old section, there are no burials in that section. Between the 2 parts is a smaller fenced
section that is the Douglas Cemetery. their lives.

On March 15, 1921, J.E. and Iona Cook entered into an agreement with the three of the trustees of the Colored Cemetery of Mart to purchase 2 and 9/100 acres of land in the amount of $500.00 to establish the cemetery located at 579 West Burleson Street in Mart, Texas.
The agreement was for three of the cemetery trustees, W.T. Smith, Reuben Payne and G.T. Reed, to pay $100.00 in cash initially and the remaining $200.00 to be paid out in $50 quarterly installments from March 1921 – June 1922. Payment was complete and thus established the first plot of land for the colored cemetery.
The “old” cemetery (Tract 1) was located on one acre of the property previously owned by deed to Ernest and Viola Douglass. Ernest and Viola Douglass elected to keep a portion of the land between the old and new tract of Evergreen Cemetery land to create a Douglass family cemetery. The Douglass family still owns and maintains the small cemetery and is not associated with the Evergreen Cemetery Association of Mart.
On November 3, 1975, Albert and Johnna Maye Scott paid $1,500.00 on behalf of the Evergreen Cemetery Association. The land purchase was able based on donations from fifteen families and members of the Mart African American community. The group purchased 2.5 acres of land. The “new” cemetery (Tract 2) is located on property previously owned by deed to Tommie Cook.
